Mitchell Goldberg

My work explores dreams, memories and the passage of time using found images and thin transparent layers of acrylic paint. Distorted, altered and rewritten is how I prefer to approach the past; time always changes our perceptions of life.
Collage has been a favorite medium of mine for forty years. Using fragments of images from long ago and placing them in unexpected new contexts is the perfect vehicle for expressing my inner emotions. Photographic image transfers increase the sense of depth and complexity in many of my collages. I love using old photos of unknown people purchased in antique stores; they add to the work a quality of mystery combined with honesty.
My Printmaking revolves around many of the same ideas, with a focus on male body image and camaraderie. Here too I use techniques involved with layering of images and transparent overlays of bright color.
I have been fortunate to study with many wonderful people who have been influential for me. Bruce Waldman taught me how to do Printmaking, and I studied Fused Glass with Dorothy Hafner. I owe so much to both of them!
