It is only in the past four years that I have incorporated my artistic yearnings into my life as a mother, former teacher and translator, and recovering over-committer. Mosaic art has since become a very meditative journey. The manual breaking of glass, marble, rock, or found objects and then setting them piece by piece into cement forces me to slow down and become truly present. As in human experience, there is conversation and compromise throughout the process of creating, as raw materials don’t always break the way I want them to, and these surprises often suggest an entirely different path than the one I initially envisioned. The medium of mosaic captures and refracts light, a fitting metaphor for the light of the human spirit, or the natural world, or the divine. I am especially grateful to be on the Studio Tour this year, after losing much of the past year to encephalitis. My creations of these past couple months reflect some of the images, colors and light I saw along the way.
